We are Drowning in Plastic: A Call to Action

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Each year, millions of tons of plastic waste find their way into our oceans, rivers, and lakes, disrupting ecosystems and threatening marine life. Here’s a look at the extent of the problem and how Blumix aims to be part of the solution in its own way.

The Scale of the Problem

Global plastic production surged from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 448 million tons by 2015, with projections indicating this number could double by 2050. Despite efforts to manage waste, around 1 to 2 million tons of plastic still end up in our oceans each year (Our World in Data) (UNEP - UN Environment Programme). The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, containing an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic, is a stark example.

Plastic's Path to the Ocean

Approximately 80% of ocean plastic pollution comes from land-based sources. Asia alone accounts for 81% of global plastic inputs to the ocean, primarily due to inadequate waste management infrastructure (Our World in Data) (UNEP - UN Environment Programme). Rich countries, while producing more plastic waste, manage it better, preventing much from leaking into the environment.

The Impact on Marine Life and Ecosystems

Every day, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped into the world’s waters (UNEP - UN Environment Programme). This pollution can alter habitats, reduce ecosystems' ability to adapt to climate change, and directly affect millions of people’s livelihoods and food production capabilities. Microplastics, tiny particles less than 5mm in size, are pervasive and have been found in marine organisms, drinking water, and even in the air we breathe, posing severe health risks (Our World in Data) (UNEP - UN Environment Programme).

Why We Created Blumix

At Blumix, we are committed to addressing plastic pollution. Our mission is to offer sustainable cleaning solutions that reduce reliance on single-use plastics. Traditional cleaning products often come in bulky, single-use plastic bottles and contain harsh chemicals. We’ve reimagined this with compact, water-soluble cleaning tablets, hand soap tablets, and laundry sheets, all delivered in plastic-free packaging. This minimizes plastic waste and reduces carbon emissions due to lighter shipping.
